So Why Can’t I Just “Preach The Word?”

Lately, we have written alot about understanding your direct ‘culture and context,’ which means understanding what has happened historically, what is happening currently, and what is likely to happen in the social, economic, and religious factors affecting the people’s lives in your immediate area.
 
Of course, some will say (and have said), “That’s too complicated. I’m going to just ‘preach the word’ like the Bible says to do. Because the Bible also says, ‘My word will not return void.'”

Do You Cherry-Pick the Bible?

A really short story with a big moral…
 
 
Some church people used the Bible in a well-meaning attempt to show non-church people where they were missing the mark and thus disobeying God.
 
The non-church people got offended and said, “That must not be what the Bible really means.”
 
The church people replied, “It is The Word of God and it means what it says!”
 
Then, someone else attempted to use the Bible to show the church people where they were missing the mark and thus also disobeying God.
 
The church people got offended and said, “That must not be what the Bible really means…”
